KUD (Karnataka University Dharwad) was started by Karnataka University Act 1949; it was established by the Bombay legislature previously known as Bombay legislature. The authority includes Belgaum, Bagalkot, Gadag, Dharwad, Haveri, and Uttar Kannada districts; the University got legal approval on March 1st in 1950. The center offers several post-graduate centers, it also offers courses in the stream of Commerce, Arts, Law, Education, Management, Science, Social Science, and Technology.
The emblem building on the has a Pipal tree at the center, legend Arrive guru, a bull, a rising sun, an open book this signifies the mission and vision of the university. It clearly states that both knowledge and wisdom should encompass like the Pipal tree and enlighten the world by eradicating illiteracy.
In its influential years the university under the leadership of Dr.D C. Pavate who was the Vice-Chancellor from (1954-67) shaped the system with equilibrium that combines environs, which speaks synchronization. The stone structure constructed in brilliant style is a compliment to his mastermind as the architect with similar academic participation, the faculty; all this incorporation brought the name Pavate Nagar to the campus for generations.
The statistics of the university comprises 43 PG departments, 5000 students (PG, M. Phil, Ph.D.), 222 teachers. 50% of the strength is of females which include PG Diploma, Ph.D. M.Phil courses. Students from outside the state contribute 6% of the strength. To abolish social elimination and to encourage social integrity seats are set aside for SC/ST, minorities, Cat-I, BC, and OBC groups in harmony with the procedure of the government of the state. For children of ex-servicemen, sportspersons, freedom fighters, and handicapped one seat is reserved. The university has had primary and high schools of its own since 1964 known as the University of public school. The school meets the requirements of B. Ed College of Karnataka University which makes the students ready for future competition.

Departments of the Karnataka University Dharwad have independent buildings of their own with sufficient office space, seminar hall, classrooms, and laboratories that are advancing from time to time with the latest infrastructure. The departments of reproductive health management and business management are separate buildings, Vidya Soudha comprises several departments of different courses of science, technology and social sciences. Different departments of physical education are situated in Kreeda Bhavan, Bhasha Bhavan accommodates the department of foreign languages, Hindi, Persian, Urdu, Gandhian studies is housed at Gandhi Bhavan, Ambedkar studies center is accommodated at Ambedkar Bhavan. Other departments such as Vishwachetana building accommodate examination segment, kanaka Bhavan accommodates kanaka peetha, SC/ST/ Minorities/ Cat I, directorate of distance education and other backward classes section, IQAC and NAAC offices. Kannada studies are housed at the R.C Hiremath study center along with Sanskrit, Marathi, and folklore. Other multipurpose halls are accommodated in various halls such as the Gandhi Bhavan, university prasaranga in independent building, senate and manasollasa hall in vidya Soudha, and auditorium in golden jubilee building.
There are 23 hostels, inclusive of working women’s and ladies hostel, 5 constituent colleges offering undergraduate courses in arts, commerce, science, law and education, fine arts Karnataka arts and Karnataka science colleges also PG courses. Residential accommodation is provided for 2600 students of UG and PG streams, the number of affiliated colleges has increased to 528 from 34 over 59 years.
The university has started 5 PG campuses at Bijapur 31 acres, Haveri 42 acres, Belgaum 178 acres, Karwar 6 acres, and Gadag 32 acres which are the district headquarters. These campuses are autonomous and have reached near completion stages. They furnish to the requirements of local and specialized courses students, for ex-West coast paper mill Dandeli runs a course on Pulp and Paper technology.
There are wide choices offered by the University such as 4 advanced diplomas, 28 diplomas, 11 certificate courses, 43 PG courses, 42 Ph.D. programs, 26 M.Phil. Almost all departments integrate interdisciplinary mechanisms to design the curriculum based on promising areas. Technical courses have been introduced in the last five years with state-of-the-art faculties to recompense the loss of engineering and medical courses that would have been revenue generators to the university. The university offers other courses such as E-Commerce, M.Com (Corporate Secretaryship), Master of Tourism Administration, MSc in (Biotechnology, Microbiology, and Computer science), MBA (CBCS, International Business, evening program), MCA, MIM, P.G.Diploma in Risk management, P.G. Diploma in Bank management.
The University recognizes the local needs and in the general development of students of north Karnataka backward region. A huge number of students lack good communication ability and do not get enough occasion to develop their personality. The university measuring all the pros and cons has incorporated Human Rights and Environmental problems, Computer applications, Development of Communication skills and personality, and the Indian Constitution as mandatory papers at the UG level. Constant ICT workshops are organized for teaching and non-teaching staff and students to furnish them with special skills and use electronic information to meet competition. Full fledge computer center has been located in the University premises for students in students home.
The central library is sufficient with educational CD-ROMs. Students who are incapable of pursuing higher studies or regular UG and PG courses are offered education through correspondence option in the chosen stream of Commerce, Arts, Social Science. The university has been successful in bringing students from South Africa, Nigeria, UAE, Iran, and Bangladesh. Russian, French, and German language courses are provided by the department of foreign languages. The post of International student advisor is in charge of the department?s Chairperson. The foremost campus in Pavate Nagar contains 750 acres, 43 departments, Auditoriums, Computer Centre, Indoor Badminton Hall, Stadium, Employment Information, and Guidance Bureau, Central Library, Academic Staff College, Students Home, Health center, Main Canteen, Printing press, SC/ST/BCM/CAT-I cells, Post Office, 2 museums in Kannada Research Institute and Museum of animals and plants, 2 Guest houses, Prasaranga and 2 Banks.
